The Trades and Technology project has advanced considerably over this past summer with the project team now working diligently on our logistics plans for the next several months. All the sub-grade building piles are complete with the exception of the new Thomas Riley Atrium piles (which will be installed immediately following the demolition of the current atrium in the fall of 2011). The exterior curtain wall system (unitized exterior panels and glazing) which will be used for all the Complex buildings is currently under production and will begin arriving on site in mid-October for installations starting with the new South Wing.

Construction details by building:

South Wing (Adjacent to existing Power Plant), Occupancy September 2011

  • All structural concrete work is now complete. Mechanical and electrical system installations are underway on all four levels as is the preliminary floor grinding and interior block partitions.
  • Structural steel barrel vault roof truss installations will begin Sept. 24th.
  • Sanitary and storm drainage line tie-ins are now complete for the entire south wing building. Mechanical integration work within the SAIT power plant is now complete for South Wing connections.


Aldred Centre (Formerly Centre Wing), Occupancy September 2012

  • All sub-grade foundation and concrete slab on grade work is complete. Structural work for lower level parkade/ instructional space is now complete. Levels 1 - 4 throughout Aldred Centre have been split into 3 separate sections allowing work to progress in each section independently.
  • New storm sewer installations around the South and East building perimeters will begin in early October.
  • Detailed removal of shoring piles and localized backfill along the south and east perimeters will begin at the end of September.


West Wing (Former Colonel James Walker Building) Occupancy September 2012

  • All structural piling is complete with foundation and slab on grade work progressing from East to West.
  • Detailed excavation for buried services is ongoing.
  • Backfill operations along east elevation will begin early October.


Thomas Riley Atrium

  • Detailed abatement programs within the TR main corridor (food services and SAIT space seating areas) are complete.
  • Preparations are underway for demolition work in and around the new access portal and main atrium (demolition scheduled to begin in fall 2011).
  • Construction phases of the SAIT Trades and Technology Project are all currently on schedule.
